The Stories That Europe Tells Itself About Its Colonial History

“She said once she was shocked that her son while being taught Belgian history, was taught nothing about Congo. She said “They teach my son in school that he must help the poor Africans, but they don’t teach him about what Belgium did in Congo.” Of course, all countries are evasive about the past for which they feel ashamed, but I was shocked by what seemed to me not evasiveness but an erasure of history.

If her son doesn’t learn that the modern Congo State began a hundred years ago as the personal property of a Belgian king, who was desperate to get wealthy from ivory and rubber, if her son doesn’t learn that the hands of Congolese people were chopped off for not producing enough resources to meet the king’s greed, if her son doesn’t learn that the Belgian government later led Congo with a deliberate emphasis on not producing an educated class, so that Congolese could become clerks and mechanics but couldn’t go to university, if her son doesn’t learn that more recently, even though it was the Americans who installed the Mobutu dictatorship, Belgium was a major force behind the scenes propping him up, if this young Belgian boy, knows nothing about these incidents, then, at some point, they would perhaps no longer have happened because the past after all is the past because we collectively acknowledged that it is so.

This young Belgian boy would grow up to see Africa only as a place that requires his aid, his help, his charity with no complications for him. A place that can help him show how compassionate he can be, and most of all, a place whose present has no connection to Europe.

It is not that Europe has denied its colonial history. Instead, Europe has developed a way of telling the story of its colonial history that ultimately seeks to erase that history”

The failure of the United Nations to take decisive action on Syria shows it is no longer “fit for purpose” and is becoming “redundant as a guardian of global peace”, Amnesty International has reported.

The world body had failed in its basic duty after Russia and China blocked several resolutions against the Bashar al-Assad regime, said Salil Shetty, Amnesty’s secretary general, launching its annual report.The UN Security Council’s charter, he said, was about taking “prompt and effective action” to protect vulnerable people, but “in the case of Syria it has done neither”.

“We saw something extraordinary in 2011, as people demanded their rights, dignity and justice and stood up to beatings, bullets and tanks. But in sharp contrast there was an appalling failure of global leadership,” he said.”What is happening in Syria is effectively crimes against humanity, but the Security Council just watched for months and months.In this day and age it is simply unacceptable that thousands of lives have been lost because the Security Council is not fit for purpose.”

It really isn’t. I wonder if it ever was. As always, it is up to the people.

The ‘KONY 2012’ video will likely hit 78 million views by the end of today but Ugandans in the area affected by Joseph Kony the worst haven’t seen the video because there is no internet access. And the few Ugandans that attended an outdoor screening of the viral video this week were throwing rocks at the screen before the film was even over.

AlJazeera followed Victor Ochen of the African Youth Initiative Network to Northern Uganda for a screening of “KONY 2012” in Northern Uganda, the area worst affected by Kony’s rebel resistance army.

They interviewed a man who was abducted by the Kony’s army who said he supports the efforts to arrest Kony but went on to say some of the promotional tactics were insensitive.

Others complained that were no Ugandans speaking for themselves. The film upset them so much they were throwing rocks at the screen before the film was even over.

“It’s propaganda for a western viewer,” Tavia Nyong’o, associate professor of performance studies at New York University, said in an interview with Colorlines.com’s Jamilah King. “Any African watching it feels very strongly like we’re not in the picture—there’s no African complexity, and there’s certainly no African agency.”

“The way they present the facts and information and history of the conflict and their solution is not something that is by any means the common point of view amongst Ugandans,” says Nyong’o. “They say it’s ‘not about politics and it’s not about the economy’ [in the video], but it’s actually all about politics and the economy.”
